About IEL

“International”という概念は、18世紀末から19世紀初頭の第二次産業革命とともに英語の形容詞として使われ始めました。

当時、大英帝国は、東インド会社を設立し、世界的な貿易、金融、物流が発展すると同時に国際法の必要性が唱えられました。
英国の法学者ジェレミー・ベンサムは、国際的な意味において “Inter national” を生み出しました。

その後、”International” と “Education” が組み合わさり必要と認識されたのは、第二次世界大戦後に世界平和を希求する国際バカロレアが誕生した20世紀中頃と考えられています。

この時期に” International Education”（国際教育）という概念が形成されましたが、21世紀に入り第三次産業革命とともに知と富の移動が世界的に進み、効率的な物・サービスの提供が生産性の高さと連動し、拡大しています。

社会構造が世界的に変化する中で、”National”（国）という概念を越えた” Inter-national”（国際）の視点から教育を調査・研究し、分析していくことが社会にとって重要です。

私たちは国際教育のシンクタンクとして研究・調査を通し、未来を担う子どもたちの国際教育の可能性を責務として全ういたします。

The concept of “International” began to appear as an English adjective in the late 18th to early 19th century, alongside the Second Industrial Revolution.

During this period, the British Empire established the East India Company, leading to the rapid expansion of global trade, finance, and logistics. As cross-border interactions deepened, so too did the recognition of the need for international law. It was the British legal philosopher Jeremy Bentham who first coined the term “Inter national” to express this emerging global perspective.

The combination of “International” and “Education” later became significant in the mid-20th century, when the International Baccalaureate (IB) was founded in pursuit of world peace in the aftermath of World War II.

This period marked the formation of the concept of “International Education.”

In the 21st century, however, the Third Industrial Revolution has accelerated the global movement of knowledge and capital. The efficient delivery of goods and services has become closely tied to productivity, driving the transformation of societies worldwide.

As global structures continue to evolve, it is increasingly vital to study and analyze education from an “inter-national” perspective—one that transcends the framework of the nation-state.
